BREVE DESCRIPCIÓN DEL CURSO:
This proposed intervention is designed to heighten students’ awareness of Intercultural Communication as a sister discipline to Translation and Interpreting Studies. It will aim to enhance students’ awareness of the need for developing intercultural literacy and skills alongside linguistic proficiency.
OBJETIVOS:
Drawing on a number of real world-scenarios, this course will:
- introduce students to some key concepts in Intercultural Communication
- consider their relative value through reflecting on a number of real-world scenarios
- consider strategies for incorporating an intercultural approach into Translation and Interpreting
- identify key attributes of an interculturally-informed Translator/Interpreter.
CONTENIDOS:
The content of the course includes:
- An introduction to some key concepts in Intercultural Communication
- An analysis of real-world scenarios
- A reflection on how to incorporate an intercultural approach into Translation and Interpreting
- A presentation of the key attributes of an interculturally-informed Translator/interpreter
METODOLOGÍA:
The goals of the course will be achieved through 4 interactive sessions (10 hours) including some individual and/or group activities to be undertaken outside of the classroom, for discussion together.
BIOGRAFÍA DE LA PONENTE:
Dr. Jane Woodin has a background in language learning and teaching, and has professional experience in translation for international delegations in Central America as well as for Australian TV, advising subtitling of Latin American documentaries, and of consultancy in international organisations as well as public health care settings. She set up and leads the Masters’ in Intercultural Communication at the University of Sheffield and has won awards for her approaches to internationalisation and inclusivity.
